Life History and Behavior
The bluefish has few predators and can live to be 12 years old. Its habitat ranges from Nova Scotia to Argentina although it is most prevalent between Argentina and Cape Cod. Besides the Atlantic Ocean, this fish has been spotted in the Mediteranean Sea, the Black Sea, and the Indian Ocean. It lives and feeds in large schools of up to thousands of individuals that may cover tens of square miles. The fish feeds in shallow water where prey is easiest to catch. The bluefish swims near the surface of nearshore and offshore seas in a variety of habitats and undertakes major coastal migrations. Young bluefish frequent bays, estuaries, and river mouths. The bluefish has a large appetite and is highly predatory. It will eat about any fish available that it can swallow. In fact, the fish is cannabelistic so its schools tend to only include like-sized individuals.
Human Interaction
The bluefish's fighting spirit and aggressive hunting style make it a popular sportfish. Bluefish will attack most lures and baits and will vigorously try to escape when hooked by running and leaping out of the water. Bluefish is best eaten very fresh as it has a strong fishy taste due to its high level of oil. The bluefish has been known to bite people.
